Abstract

In this paper, we will attempt to examine some of the issues troubling African-American family. The areas examine were environmental issues, relationships, health matters and educational challenges. We will also explore possible solutions to each one of these topics.

Intro

There are many problems facing the African-American family in today's society. The topics that have been chosen are from our personal thoughts and experiences. This team believes that they are prevalent in the African-American family. The topics that will be presented in this paper are; environmental issues, relationships, health issues and finally educational obstacles.

Environmental Issues

African-American families are faced with many problems surroundings crime. High levels of crime exist in these poverty stricken communities. Many children grow up on the streets learning to survive on their own. They have no type of guidance from their parents. No one is around or willing to help them deal with the everyday problems of growing up. What they find on the streets is a type of acceptance that feels good for the moment. Gangs are one such street group that offer that trust, acceptance and love that the youths are looking for. Everyone wants to experience the feeling of belonging. These children are lured into violent lifestyles by such feelings. It is unfortunate for children to group up in these types of environments, these behaviors are past down from generation to generation. It is very difficult for the cycle to be broken especially now that the economy requires a two parent income to get ahead financially. One of the ways to resolve the issue is by having more community support by providing more after school programs to keep the children in protected and adequately supervised locations. Another is by producing more family oriented events that bring both families and the community together.

Relationships

African-American woman feel territorial with their African-American males. The woman may feel disrespected when someone outside of the race dates their "men". I think they feel this way because the men are scares in their culture. If another race comes and takes their men away their chances on expanding their culture becomes scares as well. My first experience with African-American woman was in High school. I had a few black friends I talked to, but one day when walking with one of the guys a black girl came up to me, said to not talk to him, and gave me attitude. She pulled him away from me so I could stop talking to him. One of the guys was not black he was Puerto Rican. As I was walking to class later that day the same girl approached me with two other black girls and started giving me attitude and saying to stay away from their men. Until this day, I see the black woman fight for there man. I feel the solution to the issue would be for the African-American woman to be more educate and be more open minded to the idea of inertial dating.

Health Matters

High blood pressure is a factor in the African-American family, in that; lives are cut short due to the stress of being black in the U.S society. Having to cope
