Affect of a strong culture towards the Employees

Performance and the job satisfaction of employees will be based on the degree to which the characteristics of the organisational culture are imposed throughout the business organisation. Having a positive strong culture influencing the staff in a positive manner will improve the productivity and innovation of the employees.

  • Maintaining positive attitudes

Wegmans always put additional effort to hire people with right skill set that goes aligned with the company culture. But in typical supermarket business, the emphasis on recruitment will be focused on controlling the cost of wages, rather than the attitudes of the recruits. Hence the new recruits’ fit for the job is not thoroughly looked at. So it is evident that the new recruits in Wegmans are highly unlikely to be affected by a cultural shock, because the interests of the employee are matched with the interests of the business.

  • Encourages collective decision making

Since the recruitment process focus on finding the people with similar interests, employees will find it easy to work in groups because the conflicts will be minimal among each other.  Wegmans maintain transparency in implementing new plans and strategies and encourage other employees to participate in streamlining the strategies. It makes the implementation of plans much easier and avoids any shocks to the employee perception towards the company.

  • Skills Development

Well planned and focused training programmes are essential to maintain a highly skilled workforce. All the employees in Wegmans are gone through a structured training programme in the socialisation process for new recruits, where a full time employee will spend around six months and a part time employee around one month. Wegmans offer special training programs when they are establishing new stores. This improves the employee confidence to take new challenges and improves efficiency of work.

  • High Job satisfaction

Employees of Wegmans are offered with a set of benefits that are unmatched with the common benefits offered in the supermarket industry. Majority of the operational staff would be teenagers and they have provided college scholarships for both full time and part time employees. Above average pay rates and profit sharing initiative would grow a sense of ownership of the company to the employee. When the company performs better, employees may realise the benefit through increased share prices. Medical coverage is equally important to the employees due to rising healthcare costs.
