The family profile that I am studying is Adoption because personally I was always quiet curious on how it worked. What families had to do to adopt and the waiting period that it may take just to adopt a child or children. I was curious about the after effects that a family or child may experience from adoption or even a sibling which could be good or bad, depending on the situation. I would also love to learn a bit more about adoption because I do not have much knowledge in this topic.

I have two family members who were adopted out when they were children, and as the youngest entered adult hood, he decided to look for us, and was able to find us through other family. This was a very good reunion but I must admit, I am not very happy with my approach to it because I don’t really know too much about how my cousin grew up in his family before finding us. I do recall him having some problems dealing with the fact that his late mother gave him up and not knowing why and meeting his biological father, which he regretted doing because his father was not mentally well. I will admit that I was open armed when meeting him, and let him know that I would always there for him if he ever needed to talk or just wanted someone to listen if he was having some kind of problems. So yeah, that came to mind when doing research on this assignment.

Each year Americans adopt just over 20 000 children from abroad, and Canadians around 2 000. People turn to international adoption because there is little shortage of children, making the process reasonably quick (you could bring home your child in as little as a year). Some people adopt abroad for humanitarian reasons.

Factors of age, race and health did not seem to play a determining role.
