Introduction

        

 In 1990, Mr. Syed Manzur Elahi, the chairman of Apex group started a new venture known asApex Footwear. (Nasiruddin) In 2006, Apex Footwear Limited collaborated with Adelchi- anItalian company and changed the name to Apex Adelchi Footwear Limited (AAFL), initiating a joint venture with a new business spirit. (Nasiruddin) Apex Adelchi Footwear Limited is aleading manufacturer and exporter of leather footwear from Bangladesh to major shoe retailers inWestern Europe, North America and Japan. (apexadelchi.com, 2010)AAFL pioneered the exportof value added finished products in the leather sector of Bangladesh and is also involved in thelocal footwear retail business with the second largest shoe retail network in the country.(apexadelchi.com, 2010)AAFL has equity, technical and marketing participation from La NuovaAdelchi one of the largest footwear manufacturers of Italy. (apexadelchi.com, 2010)Public listedand traded since 1993, AAFL is professionally managed, currently employees more than 6800 persons and is in full compliance with Corporate Governance Compliance Report under section2CC of Securities Exchange Commission Notification Order. Introduction of the Report

Performance appraisal has been considered as the most significant and indispensable tool of an organization. It is highly useful in making decisions regarding various personal aspects such as promotion and merit increase. Performance measures also link information gathering and decision making process which provide a basis for judging the effectiveness of personnel's functions. In the eyes of the employees, the purpose of performance appraisal system is to describe their level of performance to determine the required output from them and also to provide them constructive suggestions which eventually improves their performance. From the organization's view point, one of the most important reasons for having a system of performance appraisal is to establish and maintain the 'principle of accountability'. Performance appraisal system was started as a method for the justification of salary and wages. Every organization desires to develop a performance appraisal system, which consists of an established procedure for evaluating the work of employees on a regular basis. It is the part of the ongoing management process. Performance appraisal system was started as a method for the justification of salary and wages.
