Arranged Marriages and Distrust:

Influence of Parental Choice

Author: Wiley Blackwell

Name of Publisher: Science Daily

Date of Publishing: February 1, 2011.

In Pakistani Society, a person is restricted by his/her parents’ choice of their mate selection and cannot choose his/her mate, and that leads to the distrust between husband and wife, this distrust causes many problems on daily base. In some culture, rules, behavioral practice, it is forbid for the boy or girl to choose their life mate. Parental influence has been seen in Muslims, Indians, Chinese, Turkish, Moroccan and South Asian societies. It has been noted by researchers that an arranged marriage is based on good references and sometimes it includes the choice of boy or girl. Researchers also saw that people who are arrange married sometimes find it difficult to build good communication with their partners and that leads to the insecurities and other marriage problems. Sometimes arrange marriages are made to achieve a higher status if a boy does not belong to the higher community. Freedom of choosing own’s mate should be given to encourage creating loved-based unions, it is noted that in cultures where freedom of mate selection is given there are less problems seen. If a marriage is not based on choice or love a person is more likely to become jealous over seemingly inconsequential events. This is probably because it is harder to be sure that the other person is in love with you out of their own volition.
