Whether or not a criminal should be punished behind bars versus having a rehabilitation program is a common and controversial social issue across our nation. Throughout the years, feelings have changed from one spectrum to the other. In my best estimation, I believe that anyone, regardless of race, religion, and beliefs, that commits a crime, should be punished to the fullest extent or equal in comparison. It’s a continuous issue that will maintain and evolve as the years pass on.

In today’s day and age, crime, violence and hatred has become ordinary. People are shot, places are robbed and yet most of it doesn’t make the news because it has become such and epidemic that we as a whole have grown used to. Some might stress that these individuals need to be re-educated and re-habilitated because they are lost and have never been shown the light of what’s accepted and not. I think that’s a weak assessment namely because every individual has the opportunity to choose their life and how to live it but there are some that don’t even make and effort and take the easy way out. Others stress punishment, and I agree. You make your choices and you face the consequences.

Jail can be looked at as the place where people are supposed to change. Whether the be a change in outlook, personality, or future decisions; they are all contemplated. Now I can’t say for sure everything that goes on in there or the emotions people really feel inside but I will guarantee you that most of them come out as a different person.
