What is HPV? HPV is the virus that causes genital warts. Its full name is Human Papilioma Virus. There are more than 100 different types of HPV, but most of them are harmless.
What causes it? Human Papilioma Virus is a very common sexually transmitted virus. An estimated 75 percent of the reproductive-age population has been infected with sexually transmitted HPV.
What are the signs and symptom? A small fraction of men and women with HPV will develop genital warts. Another small fraction of women with HPV will develop cervical changes. Most people will have no changes.
How is HPV passed? HPV is transmitted sexually through intimate genital to genital contact, including vaginal or anal intercourse or only rarely through oral sex. Transmission can also occur during genital skin to genital skin contact without sexual intercourse. Using condoms or latex barriers may provide some protection but may not cover all infected areas.
How is HPV treated? Depending on the size and location of the genital warts, there are many different ways to treat them. Some of the medicines are Imiquimod cream, 20 percent podophyllin antimitotic solution, 0.5 percent podofilox solution,
5 percent fluorouracil cream, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Since HPV is a virus, there is no cure. However, new studies indicate that approximately 70 - 90% of people with HPV may be able to get rid of the virus within two years of infection. But re-infection is always possible.
