Get Paid
College athletes spend around thirty hours a week in class and doing class related activities and about another twenty hours on the field or on the court preparing for games. College athletes work so hard on and off the field, but all they get is scholarship money and even then sometimes they do not even get scholarships. Schools make so much money off of their athletics, and college coaches get paid so much but their athletes are living under the poverty line. When in reality if it was not for the athletes, schools would not make as much money. It might be difficult for schools to pay their athletes because it is against NCAA rules. College athletes need to get paid because they do not have enough time to get a job and they struggle with money. This proposal will examine why college athletes should get paid and will suggest a solution to get these athletes paid.
The average football or basketball player is worth about 120,000 dollars up to 260,000 dollars. According to Drexel (2011), even though some athletes get “full rides,” they really do not because they are still paying for some stuff out of pocket which leaves 85 percent of college athletes living under the federal poverty line (para.3). This makes college athletes receive much less than what they are actually worth. In the television show, Last Chance U, it shows the way college football players live, and they struggle day in and day out. At times, they even have to ask their coaches for money because they do not have anything to eat. On the flip side of things, college coaches are making a fortune. As stated by Drexel (2011), the average coach who made it to the march madness tournament for college basketball make about three million dollars annually. Then you have the head coach for Alabama football, Nick Saban, who is making eleven million dollars a year. Those numbers are outrageous.
