Dress code
The dress code is becoming a major problem in schools. Students are getting detention/sent down to the office because of what there wearing. School dress codes generally dictate what can, and can't be worn by any student, such as sheer or midriff-baring blouses, clothing with ads for beer and alcohol, or low-rider jeans.
The pro's in having a dresscode is it eliminates opportunities for the ridicule of less popular or less fortunate students based on attire. Decreases theft and violence - even life-threatening situations - among students over designer clothing or expensive sneakers. Helps prevent gang members from wearing gang colors. Instilling stuents with discipline. Helps students resist peer pressure. Helps students concentrate on their school work, and also helps school officials recognize intruders who come to school. The cons are that you cannot
express your individuality. "Some believe uniforms will not erase social class lines, because policies do not apply to other items that can be used to convey status, such as jewelry, backpacks, and bikes. Uniforms may not be feasible in high school, because older students are more independent. Others argue that it is wrong to make children's right to a public-school education contingent upon compliance with a uniform police." (Caruso, Cohn and Siegal)
Some schools with a strict dress code wont allow the men to have shaved, spiked, tangled, or shelved hair. It may not be colored or highlighted, side burns should not extend past the middle of the ear, and expected to remain clean shaved. Necklaces, earrings, and braclets are not premitted. Hats are not allowed to be worn indoors except in the gym. Some may not allow articles displaying logos to be worn carried, or displayed. For the women their shirts must not come lower than four fingers below the collarbone. Skirts cannot
come higher than the knee.
