Q: Topic Avoidance, is it a bad thing?

A: Judging from the text, topic avoidance happens in every relationship. What I did not realize is that not talking to one person about a topic, but talking openly to others about the same topic can fall under topic avoidance. When I was a teenager it was not that I was avoiding telling my parents what was going on, I did not know how to talk to them. But my father would pyre into my social life and that drove me up the wall. Now I do not really have any topics that I avoid talking about with people. I don't mind being open with most things in my life, and do not think I have too much to hide. There are a few things I might not bring up to others, but not a whole lot.

However there is one topic that I hate talking about, and that is working out. But this topic is only un-enjoyable to talk about with one person and that is my boyfriend. I can talk about it with my friends, family, even the free trainer I got. I don't mind discussing the topic or accepting tips from others. But with my boyfriend, he is the last person I enjoy talking with about working out.

He does not want me to workout because of weight or body image. He wants me to workout so I will live a health lifestyle. Being a girl I have to admit having a boyfriend to tell you to workout can rub you the wrong way. But I know he does not mean it in a bad way, he know that I think that because I come from a family of thin women who don't workout. I had the mindset that I did not need to workout either. But I have now realized the living healthy means living longer and I have encouraged the other women in my family to start exercising also.

For a while this became a real conflict between my boyfriend and I. He wanted me to get motivated and I did not know how to get motivated. When he would try and teach me how to workout I would get irritated with him and not pay attention. Luckily
