Sports as a Commodity

In this essay I'm going to be writing about how sport uses the media and how media uses sport. Below I will be presenting examples of how it is done.

Sports as a commodity, sports can be used as a commodity by broadcasting revenue, matchday revenue and commercial revenue. Broadcasting revenue is when a television company needs rights to televise sports, for example sky and Bt pay a combined 5.14 billion pounds to televise Premier league matches only. Matchday revenue is gate tickets and food from the stadium where the club that is hosting the match will make all the money. And finally commercial revenue is when a club sells kits; selling kits can be really profitable if you have a lot of supporters for example Manchester United made a profit of 76 million in a week from kits with Ibrahimovic's name on alone. As profitable as commodity in sports can be it also carries a few negatives. For example big players that attract sponsors require a big investment to keep an example of this is Wayne Rooney's ludicrous £300,000 a week contract.

Sponsorship is the act of supporting a person or organization by giving money, encouragement or other help. For example Paul Pogba is sponsored by adidas and now doesn't have to pay a thing for the clothes he gets because anything he wants (mainly adidas products) is given to him for free. In return he has to wear adidas football boots while he's playing on the pitch. The benefit of that is if fans see him wearing them boots they will buy them and that will mean a profit for adidas.
