Module 1 Doing Social Psychology

blz. 3 t/m 14

Social psychology The scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another.

Forming and testing theories

Theory An integrated set of principles that explain and predict observed events.

Hypothesis A testable proposition that describes a relationship that might exist between events.

Correlational research: detecting natural associations

Correlational research The study of the naturally occuring relationships among the variables.

Experimental research Studies that seek clues to cause-effect relationships by manipulating one or more factors (independent variables) while controlling others (holding them constant).

Experimental research: searching for cause and effect

Random assignment The process of assigning participants to the conditions of an experiment such that al persons have the same chance of being in a given condition. (Note the distinction between random assignment in experiments and random sampling in surveys. Random assignment helps us infer cause and effect. Random sampling helps us generalize to a population.)

Mundane realism The degree to which an experiment is superficially similar to everyday situations.

Experimental realism The degree to which an experiment absorbs and involves its participants.

Ethische principes samengesteld door universiteiten:

* Informed consent An ethical principle requiring that research participants be told enough to enable them to decide whether they wish to participate.

* Wees eerlijk;

* Bescherm mensen tegen pijn en discomfort;

* Behandel de informatie over mensen vertrouwelijk;

* Leg achteraf het experiment volledig uit, behalve als dit schadelijk is voor de persoon.

Module 2 Did you know it all along?

blz. 15 t/m 18

Hindsight (achteraf) bias The tendency to exaggerate, after learning an outcome, one's ability to have foreseen how something turned out. Also known as the I-knew-it-all-along phenomenon.

Module 3 Self concept: who am I?

blz. 21 t/m 30

At the center of our worlds : our sense of self

Self-concept A person's answers to the question, "Who am I?".

Self-schema Beliefs about self that organize and guide the processing of self-relevant information.

Self-reference effect The tendency to process efficiently and remember well information related to oneself. Because we tend to see ourselves as center stage, we tend to overestimate the extent to which others' behavior is aimed at us.

Self and culture

Individualism The concept of giving priority to one's own goals over group goals and defining one's identity in terms of personal attributes rather than group identifications.

Collectivism Giving priority to the goals of one's groups ( often one's extended family or work group) and defining one's identity accordingly.

Interdependent self : people are more self-critical and have less need for positive self-regard. Identity is defined more in relation to others. Malaysians, Indians and Japanese are much more likely than Australians, Americans, and the British to complete the 'I am' statement with their group identities.

Self-knowledge

- Explaining our behavior

Waarom doen we dingen zoals we doen?

- Predicting our behavior

Wanneer men gedrag probeert
