Prostitution describes the act of sexual intercourse in exchange for money. Prosititution is also one of the oldest proffesions in human history. Like any other contriversal topic, prostitution has it's pros and cons. It is illegal in most parts of the United States and legal in many other countries. Depending on your morals you may view prosititution differently. I believe through my research that the United States should legalize prositiution in a controlled environment. I believe that prostitution should be legalized because of the information I have researched on: the history, laws, and medical situations of prostitution.

One of the first forms of prostitution was sacred prosititution, supposedly practiced among the Sumerians. In the Babylonian culture women had to have sex with a foreigner as a sign of hospitality for a symbolic price. Prostitution was common in ancien Israel as well, despite being tacitly forbidden by Jewish Law. Prostituion can even be traced as far back as the Bible. In a story from the Bible, a prostitute in Jericho named Rahab assisted Israelite spies with her knowledge of the current socio-cultural and military situation due to her popularity with the high-ranking nobles she serviced, amound others. In ancient Greece, prosititution was engaged in by both women and boys. The female prosititutes could be independent and sometimes influential women. They were required to pay taxes and wear distinctive dresses. A famous prositute named Lais from Greece was not only famous for her company but as well as for her beauty. Women like this in Greece charged extraordinary sums of money for their services. In ancient Rome, prositutes were often foreign slaves, caputred, purchased, or raised for that purpose by "prositute farmers". The Roman empire also enslaved free women into prositution for legal punishment. All of these historical facts reflect the views of prosititution in human society.

There is a very wide spectrum of the legality of prositution. Prosititution has the death penalty in some Muslim countries, while prosititues in the Netherlands are tax-paying and unionised professionals. Every culture has their own definition of prosititution. In Japan, vaginal prostitution is against the law while fellatio prostitution is legal. In all but two U.S. states, the buying and selling of sxual services is illegal and usually classified as a misdemeanor. Brothels are legal in several counties of Nevada. In Rhode Island, it is legal to exchange money for sex, but operating a brothel and street solicitation are not. In Las Vegas, Nevada, third party workers distrubute risque flyers with information of local prostitutes, even though it is illegal in Clark County where Las Vegas is located. Prostitution was widely legal in the United States up until 1910
