President Bush

President George W. Bush began his first term as president on January 20, 2001 and ended on January 20, 2005, which is when his second term began. The current term is only about half way over. During his first term, George W. Bush faced many challenges such as terrorist, immigration, war, and oil prices. He had at one point the highest approval rating of any president. That is likely not the case anymore as troops still prowl the grounds of Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other middle-eastern countries. All in all Bush has done a lot of things that were supposed to help America out but none of them have really worked out. At first, yes, he had done a "great" job, but the fact is that after the first two to three years the highest rated president started falling in ranks. While being occupied by the "War on terrorism", which has somehow flipped to the War on Iraq, President Bush has neglected at least three of eight roles. These roles include Chief Executive, Chief Diplomat, and Chief Citizen. Some may think that there are more, but it depends on your interpretation.

The first and most important role being neglected is Chief Citizenship. The roles definition is clear, "In this role, the president is concerned with such things as unemployment, high prices, taxes, business profits, and the general prosperity of the country. The president does not control the economy, but is expected to help it run smoothly"(Encarta e1). Here are some interesting facts for consideration: under Bush there is now 43 million Americans with no health insurance. Is now responsible for an unemployment rate of 6% and the now 9 million people out of work in America - 3.3 million more than when Bush took office. He cut health care benefits for veterans, despite a 13% unemployment rate among those aged 16-24, Bush proposed to eliminate Youth Opportunity Grants - A program that provides job training to the nation's youth. A $225 million program in 2002 is now being done away with so Bush can have more money for Iraq. He cut funding for 375000 low-income college students and reduced Pell Grant amounts to such a severe degree that it effectively caused 84000 students to no longer be legible for Pell Grants. Pell amounts have been overall reduced for 1.5 million students. There are countless more allegations and confirmations against President Bush. What kind of nation is he manipulating this one into? What kind of nation are we now compared to the previous president's nations'? How can any country take us seriously when he cannot even accept homosexuals being part of this nation? When Bush took leadership of this country it was turned from an economic high, to an economic low in only six years to date.
