Research Assignment #2

INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDENT

The student that I have chosen to do my case study on is an African-American child in my Second Grade Magnet classroom at Baldwin Hills Elementary and Magnet School. Even though we have a few ELD classrooms in our school, it was in my interest to conduct a study on the style of learners I have in my classroom. We have a program at our school called AEMP, which stands for Academic English Mastery Program. This program teaches teachers how to identify second language students. As we are familiar with ELD and ELL students, a lot of educators are not familiar with another style of second language learners called SEL's. SEL's stands for Standard English Learner's. Some African-American students who are learning how to speak Academic English/Standard English versus their home English language are supported through this program. I have a few SEL's in my classroom. The students I chose to do my case study on is in my second grade classroom. She has attended our school since First grade. Her primary language is Ebonics and her reading level is 3. She had to repeat First grade.

INTERVIEW/SURVEY

1. What do you do before you read? I look at the title and the pictures

2. If you come to a word that you don't understand while you are reading, what do you do? I try to sound it out

3. Who do you know that is a good reader? Umm, Jenai is a good reader.

4. Why do you think that person is a good reader? Because she know how to say all the hard words.

5. Do you think that person ever comes to a word he/she does not know? No because I've never heard her make a mistake. She reads like a third grader.

6. If that person comes to a word he/she does not know, what do you think she/he does? I don't know, maybe she sounds it out or asks the teacher.

7. What do you do when you come to a word that you don't know while you are reading? I try to say it but it might come out wrong. Sometimes I just skip it.

8. What would the teacher do to help someone who doesn't know a word while he/she is reading? The teacher will probably help me but sometimes when she's not there I still don't know how to say some words.

9. What do you do to help yourself understand and/or remember a story after you have read it? Sometimes I will write a book report or something. Maybe I'll tell a friend about it.
