Mexican Americans

Through out the years, the Hispanic population appears to be growing in large quantities. The group "Hispanics" range from Mexicans, Cubans, Central and South Americans, Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics. Panethnicity is the development of solidarity between ethnic subgroups. One example of panethicity is when Anglos say that "all Hispanics look alike", they tend to believe that all Latinos are the same due to Hispanics skin color or language spoken. Hispanics are brought together through language, national television, and newspapers or periodicals. Only around twenty-four percent prefer to use panethicity names such as Hispanic or Latino. Hispanics share the heritage of the Spanish language. All Hispanics do not speak Spanish all the time and some do not even know the language. The amount and level of Spanish spoken has to do with the area they live in, the amount of time live in the United States and if they were born here or not. Bilingualism is the use of two or more languages in places of work or educational facilities. In most places around the United States, English is the language used in schools for educational purposes. Many schools offer programs of bilingual education, in order to teach native language children. These programs teach children about the culture of both, English and Spanish. It also allows students to learn academic material in their own language while they are learning a second language. The chapter continuous on about maquiladoras which are foreign owned companies on the Mexican side of the border with the United States. Mexicans often illegally cross the border to earn more money for their families. These maquiladorsr are just south of the United States. Mexican border who have workers employed at low wages than those earned in the United States. Even though immigrants come to the United States to earn money, they send some part of their earnings back to Mexico. The money that is sent to Mexico and from the United States is referred to as remittances or migradollars. The amount that was estimated to be sent in 2003 was 14.5 Billion dollars. The money is used to purchase food, clothing, and housing. Recently, there has been a growth in small businesses which the source of money comes from the income earned from illegal workers in the United States.
