In our society today, marriage is such a normal and expected event that most people don’t even stop to think why they are so drawn to make this long-term commitment. We all grow up and usually see our parents being married and see images and movies of people getting married and learn how important it is. Apart from just following the tradition that is so common in our culture, there are also many benefits, seen and unseen that accompany marriage that lure unsuspected victims to gain its rewards.

I have always been drawn to things and ideas that are out of the ordinary, and the idea of marriage to me personally seems so limiting and suffocating. It is interesting to look at what the appeal to such a ceremony and commitment is and what status it brings about for people. For girls growing up marriage is seen as the climactic moment in your young adult phase where you find your prince charming and celebrate how much you love each other and swear that you will always be together for the rest of your lives. It is seen as your day, your day to be a woman with a man who will support you, and your day to wear a pretty dress, have lots of flowers and music and all your family giving you attention and praise for this worthy accomplishment.

Apart from the wonderful fantasy like feeling many people associate with marriage due heavily to Hollywood, there are also other strong factors that society weighs heavily upon us for reason to get married. A person that is twenty-five years old may be deemed an adult, but if that same person were to get married, there would definitely be a change in the way his or her family, friends, peers, and society at large would then view that person. Marriage symbolizes that you are a responsible, respectable, and affluent adult that is committed to the idea of family and want to make one for yourself. Who wouldn’t want these kinds of associations and status as a grown adult?
