Interview with Mathew Wong

One of my friends called Mathew Wong. He is one of my best friends in San Francisco. He studies in City college of San Francisco for three years. We met at the school orientation. Mathew comes from Hong Kong. He was a new immigrant to United States since 2000. At the end of 19th century, Hong Kong was still a colony of United Kingdom. China and England have signed a contract about ceding Hong Kong for a hundred year. This contract will be end in 1997. Many Hong Kong people do not believe China government. They mostly think that China government will restrict Hong Kong economy freedom and bill of rights. So that, many Hong Kong people are worrying and planning to go to oversea before Hong Kong get back to be part of China. Actually, there are several popular countries are good for immigration, such as Australia, Canada, England and United States. They all are strong and trustworthy countries. Hong Kong people believe their government would be more reasonable, responsible and respect the bill of right compare with China government. Therefore, Mathew's family chose their destiny country, United State of America.

United State of America, Mathew's family thinks that America is a strong and dependent country. US are the most powerful, high influence and liberal country all over the world. Mathew's parent want his son can have a foremost education and widest his sight. It would be helpful for Mathew to enhance his view to the world.

In fact, to become a resident of the United State of America is not that easy. Every applicant has to wait around ten years to get approved. America government has several hundred of quota per year for the new coming foreigner to be the resident of the United States of America. The US immigration department uses the lottery method to choose which one will be eligible to receive the "Green card". "Green card" is the identification card that approved you are the resident of the United States of America. If you are not the holder of this identification card, you will not be able to stay in America for a long period of time. Moreover, you cannot find a job legally in America without this card. Therefore, it was a really important verification document for the immigrants. After filing out many documents and paper works, finally, Mathew's family was selected by the US immigration department in 1996. They are very exciting when receive the letter from the US immigration department because they wait almost ten years. Now, they have the chance to be part of the US family.

Mathew's family are so excited when they got the news. Indeed, it was a great news for the family who plan to escape the control of the china government. However, they have to face a lot of potential difficulties and challenging in the coming future. For instance, the most common problem is the culture shock. The living style was completely different between US and Hong Kong. Every people who live in Hong Kong are in rush and under pressure all the time. Everybody have to move and work fast in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a reality and materialistic economy. People are required to use the most efficient time to do the best performing work. If you cannot follow this working style, you will be eliminated by the others. In US, people do not have a lot of pressure on their jobs. For example, everyone have to finish and do well on their own job daily. They do not have to take care of any other extra work. They mostly work independent. If they need to work overtime, company has to pay them extra money plus the basic salary per hour. In Hong Kong, Mathew's father worked overtime at night but he did not get any extra pay during overtime.

Mathew's parents both are not good at English. His father and mother both are high school graduate. They cannot speak English fluently. Therefore, communication would be a big problem for them. Fortunately,
