Topic: Global warming, Greenhouse Effect and Climate Change.

Global warming can be defined as a phenomenon where the average temperature of the Earth increases. It happens when greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide and methane trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere. These gases emitted from cars and factories. These man-made gases absorbed the infra red heat from the sun and make the earth warmer than it should be as the gases trapped in the atmosphere. Human made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons’ that have been used in spray cans, refrigeration materials and air-conditioner caused the ozone depletion and contribute to global warming as well. It is one of the most serious challenges facing us today as this phenomenon brings about many dangerous consequences to natural environment on the earth as well as human being.

In our poster, we try to bring up some issues that contribute to global warming. The combustion of fossil fuels by automobiles, electric power plants and smelting and refining facilities releases waste gases such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The production of carbon dioxide from this activity is rising while the amount of plant life on the earth is shrinking. Therefore, we choose orange and yellow as the colour of earth as it is a sign our earth is sick and getting warmer from day to day. Then, some pictures that contribute to global warming such as cars, factories and open-burning on the earth. Then, we draw two hands below the earth in green and blue as it symbolizes our hands and we must work together to save the earth such as through the 3R principle, reduce, reuse and recycle.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the amount of carbon dioxide produced by humans mostly from factories and automobiles has risen tenfold. Much of this carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans. To make matter worse, most rain forests are lost by burning which releases even more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide behaves much like the glass roof of a greenhouse, letting heat from the sun pass in to the earth while preventing much of it to the earth while preventing much it from radiating back away from the planet.

Another factor of global warming is the release of harmful toxic and effluent from factories and automotives as the increases of world population. When more countries become industrialized, more cars are taken to the road and excessive emission of greenhouse gases release. Next, open-burning as it is the fastest and easiest way to dispose non-organic wastes and also to clearing of land for farming or agricultural purposes. Then, deforestation as more trees being chopped down and lands being cleared for agricultural purposes. The effect of global warming can be seen when the accident of 7.6 million of dead fishes in Salton Sea happened because of the excessive heat of summer. The accident occurred because water evaporates at lower temperature than most pollutants. The water vapour that rises from the seas is relatively pure, leaving contaminants behind. Although the hydrological cycle generates clean water in the form of rain, pollutants steadily build up in the ocean. Therefore, the contaminants left can killed aquatic life.

Obviously, the role played by carbon dioxide is the most significant. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen steadily since 1906. It creates a greenhouse effect like glass in a greenhouse. It allows light rays from the sun to past through but it do not allow heat rays from the surface of the earth to escape. An increase in carbon dioxide therefore can cause an increase in the temperature of the atmosphere. Scientists estimate that global average temperature can increase as much as 5 degree Celsius in the middle of 21th century.

Moreover, greenhouse effect brings about arise in the average global temperature. The ocean absorbs heat 80% consequently and it contributes to rising of ocean temperature. In the 1960’s average of temperature is 26 degree Celsius,
