The report should contain the following:

Title

- It should be a summary of your experiment, for example, ‘Synthesis and Characterization of Tin (IV) Iodide’.

Aim

- What did you synthesize? What synthesis methods did you use? How did you carry out characterization, and what characterization method did you make use of for this experiment?

Introduction

- What are the uses of your products and reactants? Their nature?

- Any safety concerns? For example, ‘This compound is corrosive. Thus, wear safety gloves when handling this compound. That compound may emit white fumes that are toxic if inhaled. Thus, perform this experiment in a fume hood, and wear safety goggles to protect your eyes as well.

Procedure

- Describe in detail what you did, such that another person can repeat the experiment.

- State all amounts used, as well as sizes of all containers (5 ml of NaOH, 250 ml beaker).

- Every technique, such as reflux and melting point determination, must be described as well. Do not say ‘the solution was refluxed’, say ‘the solution was poured into a 200ml round bottomed flask, which was then connected to a straight water condenser. The flask was then heated in a water bath...’

Results

- Observations and numbers only, do not place explanations here!

Calculations

- Calculate the theoretical yield

- Check for the limiting reagent.

Discussions

- State and explain flaws, errors, as well as improvements for each flaw.

- Was the experiment successful?

- Refer to aim.

- State yield, mrlting point, etc.
