Inkheart is about Meggie and Mo being able to read things out of a book if they read out loud. Meggie can also read things back into a book. In the end meggis reads the real shadow out but reads it back into the story by read feniglio's ending. in the end dustfinger steals the last inkheart book from Mo. Resa lost her voice but is meggie's mom. Basta and Mortola/magpie/Capricorn's mom runs away when Capricorn himself and all his men dies. Feniglio get sucked into the story of Inkheart.

Meggie and Mo leave their farmhouse with Dustfinger to hide a book titled, Inkheart from Capricorn and his men. It gets hidden in one of the hiding spots in Elinor's library. Dustfinger betrays the three and Capricorn's men come one night and take the book and Mo follows them, thinking that it's the right book. It happens that Elinor, a typical book collector having interest in just about any book, switched out the book from its hiding place to take a look at it. Meggie decides to go looking for Mo after she finds out that Elinor has it instead. Elinor offers to go with her, and Dustfinger leads them to Capricorn's village where they lose the book and is kicked into a "cage" where Mo is. There, Mo explains to Meggie about what happened 9 years ago...

Mo used to read aloud to his wife and sometimes things from this world would switch places with things from the story being read. When he reads Inkheart out loud one evening, he finds Dustfinger, Basta, and Capricorn in his house in place of his wife and two cats. Horrified, he tries to read them back into the story, but fails. The three characters from the book scatter away and Mo tries hard to bring his wife back. Dustfinger visits now and then to beg him to read him back into the story, but Mo fails and finally moves in secret with his daughter. Nine years pass since the incident, bringing us back to the storyline.

Capricorn makes Mo read things out of books for him and he succeeds in reading out some treasure from Treasure Island and on his second try, he reads a boy named Farid out from Tales from the Thousand and One Nights. In the meanwhile, Dustfinger finds out that Capricorn isn't going to keep his promise of sending him back in Inkheart for giving him Mo's book. So at night, he frees the prisoners, and with Farid, they escape. Elinor's
