What Would John Stuart Mill Think Of Socialzed Health Care In The Usa?

John Stuart Mill would agree that the United States should institute a socialized health care system. He championed the idea of Utilitarianism where society should provide the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Health is what allows a person to operate and be a functional member of society. It is also within the best interest of the US to give more people the ability to work in supporting one another. Utilitarianisms main idea is the wellness of all people. Access to healthcare would be a central tenant to this philosophy. No one is able to be at full happiness when they are sick or injured.

Socialized healthcare gives people who don’t make much money less stress on their psyche and their wallet. The person is able to pursue other endeavors without having to worry about the ability to receive health care if an accident occurs. After a person receives healthcare, they may be burdened with paying the hospital bill. This can lead to overworking and exhaustion. A person cannot achieve happiness if they are constantly working and worrying.

Because a great number of people would be needed to provide service for their society, it would be in their own interest to rehabilitate a sick member. If people are left to their own devices to take care of themselves, they will be less likely to return to the work force in a reasonable time frame. Coupled with this if more people became ill than those that remain healthy society will begin to fall apart due to lack of man power.
