The Glass Castle

"The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walla is about a family of six that moved from place to place in poverty. Jeannette tells about the struggles she and her family went through to get where they are today. This family of six lived in many states and went through harsh states to survive. Her mother and father never kept a steady job, but they had great intelligence. Jeannette and her brother and sisters barely went to school to get the proper education they needed. The mother, Rosemary Walls, stuck to her dreams to become another Picasso or Van Gogh. She stayed at home, painted, and did nothing else. The father, Rex Walls, was a very intelligent man who knew a lot of things that could have gave him a steady job and provided for his family, instead of drinking and smoking his life away. These kids of Rose Mary and Rex Walls, Jeanette, Brian, Lori, and Maureen stood beside their parents until they were old enough to fend for themselves.

Conflicts were always popping up in this book. The main conflict that kept appearing in the novel is money. Money was always short during the early years of the Walls family. Due to this conflict every family member was affected because it led to no food, late bill payment, led them to wear thrift clothes that they passed down to each other. Her family got through this conflict by money that one of them got by luck, but Jeannette, Lori, Brian, and Maureen over came their money problems when they moved to New York and left their parents behind. Another conflict is when Jeannette would get into fights with other kids that didn't like what she wore or because she was poor. Brian would always help her by scaring them whenever they approached Jeannette. These books have many conflicts and if I was to write about them all I would never end.

In literature setting is a term referring to the time and location in which a story takes place. Mood is the atmosphere in a novel. In "The Glass Castle" the mood is surprising and sad all wrapped into one. At the beginning of the book, it was surprising because it started off by her seeing her mother digging through the dumpster. Through out the story there are a lot of surprising things. In "The Glass Castle" the setting is New York in cab. The most time is spent in Welch,WV.

Point of view is the way the narrotor is telling the story. Tone is the attitude of a story and without it the work won't have no feeling and will be boring. The tone of this book varies a lot. The book can sometimes be sad and go right to happy. The tones in this book can surprise you from time to time but there are to many to talk about.

The point of view of this book is first person. This book is in the first person point of view because it is a memoir and automatically the book is using I, and We.

In "The Glass Castle" Rex, Rose Mary, and Jeannette are the main characters because they seem to have the most problems. Rose Mary Walls is a very intelligent lady who has many talents. Rose Mary has many talents but fail to use them, she was very lazy. Rose Mary for many years depended on her art work to get her through things to solve all her problems. Rose Mary had many jobs as a teacher only because her mother made her get a degree because she knew that Rose Mary's art wouldn't succeed the way the Rose Mary wanted it to.

Rex Walls is the man of the house, the supposed to be provider, an alcholic, and smoker. Rex is a very intelligent man who knows a lot of useful information that could of gave him a steady job. Rex went from job to job, came home just about every night drunk. He had many dreams to build things, in particular a home called the Glass Castle, from which the book is named.
