Suicidal Thoughts

Suicidal thoughts are a way for people to forget the problems they are having, and instead think about not living. Suicidal thoughts usually tend to occur when a person does not have any friends or family members there for them, has had something tragic occur in their life, or is just worried about something that is bothering them. In the novel The Catcher and the Rye, the play The Glass Menagerie, and the novel The Member of the Wedding many characters show signs of suicidal thoughts.

First, in the novel The Member of the Wedding, the character Frankie shows signs of suicidal thoughts, Frankie is a very lonely person because she does not have many friends. In the novel, she is shut out of the clubhouse by the neighborhood girls. She is shut out because she smells bad and is extremely tall for her age. Another reason Frankie feels lonely is because of her father, she doesn’t get to sleep with him anymore now that she has grown older and has become a young lady. Her father feels that it is time for her to sleep in her own bed. However, Frankie feels that he does not care for her or love her anymore. Also, her brother is getting married and they do not spend as much time together as they used to because he is about to get married and move away from her. Frankie feels she does not belong anywhere, not with the other girls her age, or with her housekeeper Bernice. She feels that she needs to be a member of a group or a part of something because if she is not she has no reason to live.

Next, in the novel The Glass Menagerie the girl Laura is both stressed and lonely and often has thoughts of suicide. Laura feels that she has to impress her mother in whatever she does. This makes a person very stressed because when it comes to living up to someone else’s expectations, success is almost impossible. Laura also feels lonely because she does not go out much at all. Her days consist of waiting for a gentle-man caller to come and “get her off her feet”
