Same-Sex Marriage Group Project

Final Analysis

i. Overview of the investigation

In our investigation into the possible effects that same-sex partners could have in our community if our State and Federal Government were to legally recognize same-sex marriages seems we concentrated on the historical, moral, religious, social, political, and economic aspects that this issue could raise. We accomplished this task by having each group member cover a specific aspect of the issue. Each group then, investigated their chosen aspect through various research tools available to them. Group members used Internet and electronic resources to find articles on the issue, watched local and national news programs about the issue, and reviewed local and national articles about the issue to gain background knowledge on the issue of same-sex marriage. Group members then applied their research and interviewed local members of our community to help gauge our communities feeling on the issue.

In regards to the political aspect of same-sex marriage, we began by examining the traditional views, which have been perceived to be held by the two major political parties. We also examined 2004 Election and examined how the issue of same-sex marriage affected the political platforms of the presidential nominees. We also examined how politicians affected the issue of same-sex marriage with the issuance of legislation and amendments to state constitutions. We then used this information while interviewing members of our community to help gauge their thoughts and feelings about how same-sex marriage could possible affect politics in our community.

ii. Suggestions for effectuating change and awareness on your issue

According to James Dao ("Genesis of a crusade on same-sex marriage." International Herald Tribune: The IHT Online), 2005 will be an important year for the issue of same-sex marriage in Kansas. There will be a huge push to have an amendment to the Kansas Constitution to define marriage as a relationship between one man and one woman.

The biggest suggestion that could be made to our community on effectuating a change on the issue of same-sex marriage is that they need contact both the state and federal legislative representatives and let them know how they feel about the issue. If they are against the same-sex marriages, then they need to put pressure on the representatives to push either legislation or proposed constitutional amendments that would ban same-sex marriages. If they are for same-sex marriages, then they need to put pressure on their representatives to combat legislation or proposed constitutional amendments that would ban same-sex marriage.
