The 2007 MLB Season opened for the Royals on April 2nd, and surprisingly enough the day resulted in a win for the Royals. However, within the next eleven games they have only managed to win two more and they now sit at the bottom of the Central American League with a record of 3-8. They now are third to last in the entire MLB with only Washington and Philadelphia having worse records at 2-9 and 2-8 respectively (Regular Season Standings). So I have to ask, should the Royals even consider finishing the season, or should they just end it now?

The Royals have had a recent history of not only losing seasons, but horrible losing seasons. Within the past three seasons the Royals have finished with over 100 losses. “With their 2006 record of 62-100 they became the 11th team in baseball history to lose 100 games three years in a row” (Fleming). The Royals haven’t consistently won since the early 90’s, and in the past eleven seasons the Royals have had only one winning season in 2003 with an 83-79 record. After the 2003 season, hopes were high in Kansas City but those hopes were short lived as the Royals went back to their losing ways and finished the season in dead last with a 58-104 record, the worst in franchise history (Fleming).

So once again, the Royals started out the 2007 season with new optimism. However, someone should inform them that they are the Royals and that they really should just go ahead and pack it in now. With their record already putting them at the bottom of the League standings, is there really any reason to continue on? After watching the Royals struggle through the past three seasons, I wonder if they still consider what they do baseball. At times, I think that I have seen high school and college teams play better baseball than the Royals do. Maybe the Royals should try recruiting a team of high school kids to play for them. At least they wouldn’t have to pay them as much to be out on the field, and they would probably enjoy it more than the pros do too.

I was under the impression that baseball consisted of scoring runs, hitting home runs, and entertaining the crowds. The only entertaining the Royals are doing are the fireworks that come on after the game on Friday
