IN-BASKET EXERCISE

[ Chief Iam Wright’s In-Basket-B]

Joe Somereve

12/1/15

PROBLEMS

1). The first problem for Chief Iam Wright is the annual Columbus day parade in the city of Pleasant. The problem associated with the Columbus day parade is having the police department having to deal with street closures and heavy traffic due to people detouring from the parade route.

2). The second problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in basket is having to come up with plans to use the $850,000.00 to use in a community-policing project. The main issue with this is that he only has two weeks to come up with a plan to get the entire community involved.

3). The third problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is the Mayor requesting an apology for his interruptions, eye rolls, huffs and puffs whenever the Mayor was speaking during his news conference about fellow P.O. Allen Mason. The mayor is also demanding the apology be addressed to him and the entire city of Pleasant community.

4). The fourth problem found in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is Constance C. Complainer complaining about her neighbor’s teen children blocking the street and having party’s nearly every Saturday. She also states that there is a lot of drinking, use of marijuana, and kissing. Mrs. Complainer is located at 22 Rogers Rd and her neighbors are located at 24 Rogers Rd.

5). The last problem found in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is the threat letter sent from an unknown individual going by and alias known as The Goblin. The letter states that there is going to be trouble soon at city hall a lot of people will be surprised a catastrophe will come. It also maybe has a planned date of attack within the letter.

SOLUTIONS

1).  The solution to the first problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is to start planning now on how you are going to block off the parade route and also how long before the parade will you block off the route. If the parade starts at 2:00pm you should probably block off the route starting at 1:00pm to give traffic a chance to get where they are going. You will also need to have officers stationed at all of the intersections to make sure no one drives through anyway.

2). The solution to the second problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is to use some of the $850,000.00 to setup a event at a location within the city of Pleasant and have the community show up for games, activities, and also set up information tables so if any citizens have questions about the department itself or how you go about a certain situation you can answer those questions. The goal of this would be to make the community feel like they are part of the department.

3). The solution to the third problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is to have him hold his own press conference issuing an apology to the mayor and the community as a whole. This would also be a good time for him to voice his own opinions and express why he was doing so.

4). The solution to the fourth problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is to send a patrol unit over to Rogers Rd on Saturday night to get an idea of the actual problem going on at the location.

5). The solution to the last problem in Chief Iam Wright’s in-basket is to beef up security at City Hall for the following weeks after this letter was received. There should be officers specifically assigned to City Hall every shift and they should make sure that the people entering the building are supposed to be there.

BEST SOLUTION

The problem I am choosing for Chief Iam Wright is the threat against city hall the fifth letter in his in-basket. The best solution to this problem would be to station officers at every possible entrance to City Hall. I would also hold a meeting within City Hall to notify everyone that works there that there is a possible threat against the building or possible someone that works there. I would also assign detectives to find out how the letter got in my in-basket and also where is came from. The date within the letter could also be a possible attack date so I would put the swat team, bomb unit, and k9 unit around the immediate vicinity of City Hall. You would have to hope that just the presence of the police force would deter the threat from the criminal and make them realize that it was an impossible task and maybe they would even turn themselves in. There is a chance that they could still attack the building or a specific person because who knows how many people are behind the letter. So in that case the officers would just have to be ready for the possible actions that might happen.

PROBLEMS

1). The first problem in Captain Everette’s in-basket is from harbor Lt. McGuire stating that the 25 horsepower Johnson outboard motor used on Patrol Rescue Boat  #3 is broken and cannot be repaired. The window to buy a replacement is immediate.

2). The second problem in Captain Everette’s in-basket is the attachment from the first problem, which is an estimate for the replacement motor. The estimate is from Dave’s Marine at 21 Boat Point Rd. It is an estimate for a 1992 Johnson 125 horsepower outboard short shaft at $2,352.00. The problem is that it is a bigger more expensive motor than what was originally on the boat.

3). The third problem found in Captian Everette’s in-basket is from Chief Iam Wright asking why one member of the detectives division had 285 hours of overtime for the month of august while the rest of the detectives division as a whole only had 156 hours overtime for the same period. Captain Everette now has to see why that detective worked so much overtime and have an explanation within 8 days at the next staff meeting.

4). The fourth problem in Captain Everette’s in-basket is from Detective Lt. Conte asking for the necessary fund to send two detectives from his department to receive training at Pleasant University for a three day seminar on the topic of DNA and its relevance in death cases. The cost of the trip would be $1,500 per participant which includes lodging and meals.
