Persuasive Paper

In this assignment, I was instructed to write a persusive paper on current events that affecteded me. In today's economy, it was tough coming up with just one subject. But was able to turn my attention to how our local city government is running things these days. With the Mayor Kilpatrick cutting jobs because the City of Detroit has a massive debt of over 230 million dollars, I can say that I along with so many others in this city was greatly affected with this discion, January 13, 2004 will live in empamy for the citizens of Detroit. That was the day it was announced that in order to balance Detroit's budget, the Mayor had to eliminate 923 positions which would include 686 layoff notices targeted for the 27 city departments. On this day, my husband William called me from is cell upset telling me that he was laid off from his position that he had held for 10 years. I could hear the anger in his voice. "Why did the city council wait so long to fix Detroit's money problems?" "Why did my co-workers and I lose our jobs over money mismanagement?" I could not respond. The only thing I remember saying was "Honey, I'm sorry". I knew at that point, we were in for some lean times ahead. We were barely making it with two incomes, how could we make it on one? In addition to worrying about how we were to make ends meet, we have a daughter who has ansthma and during the news of Williams layoff, she was constantly having astima attacks and I was missing hours of work on my job because of my daughter's attacks.
