Personal Perspective Paper

One of the most traditional problem solving methods, Trial and Error, can be categorized as a Heuristic technique. It is not a guaranteed solution, but it is beneficial in that it approaches the problem without directional bias. It becomes more useful when a record of attempts is kept in order to decrease repetition of the same path to a solution. It was through trial and error that George Washington Carver discovered many uses for the peanut (ENCYCLOPEDIA), but I suppose Ezra Warner developed a model when he sought to improve the can opening process. His model started with a problem (opening a can with a hammer and a chisel), and ended with a solution (a can opener). The trial an error method simply increases the possibility of finding a solution.

Criticism and suggestions seem to be the most straight forward technique to improving a plan or idea. What better way to get a round table view of the issue at concern, than to simply ask those who are experiencing the problem. I don't think I'm speaking for myself when I say I haven't had very good luck with this method. I personally don't mind receiving criticism as long it is reasonable, constructive and a legitimate suggestion, but my co-workers show no tolerance for this method. All too quickly it gets mistaken as a personal attack. I have learned that certain characteristics play a major role in the overall reaction of the criticism recipient. It's probably best to have a pre-selected audience upon delivery, one-on-one conversation greatly decreases the possibly of embarrassment.
