- tokens of femininity and masculinity

Preparation:

-Set out magazines, posters, pens, and notepads.

ALIEN JOURNALISM

Four groups, halved to form scribes and illustrators. Class pretends that they know nothing of the human race and they are alien to this world- their only surviving evidence of human race is our magazines. They flick through them and make assumptions based on their content.

One group: what men look like/what they wear

Second: what women look like/what they wear

Third: what men's hobbies and interests are

Fourth: what women's hobbies and interests are

Journalists will report back.

Discussion:

Q.What did we find?

Q. How much is true?

Q. How much of what was presented by the groups do we aim to be?

Q. Can you recognise in the past where you have been caught up in trying to live up these expectations?

Example of our own experience with our genders:

me: tomboy, girly girl, then balanced.

It's okay to be contradictory. In fact, aim for it so people can't Ð''place' you.

Discuss your own phases through school/uni/work of subcultures, groups, clubs, gangs, friend groups and assess on a scale how feminine or masculine they were. What about now?

Be contradictory, Wear lots of hats Ð'- as teachers, doing this can quell stereotypes and teach others (by modelling behaviour) that it's okay to not try to BE a stereotype
