Introduction

As a resident of New York City, I decided to choose the topic discussing the requirements and application processes to becoming law enforcement officials in the city and state. I am a business major at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. This is the only criminal justice course I will be taking. I feel it will benefit my education as a business student by having a more in depth look on the criminal justice system. To go along with that, one of my uncles is a sergeant in the courts and I’m interested to see the process of becoming a courts officer.

NYPD

There are many requirements to become an officer New York Police Department. Applicants can be as younger as 17 Ð'Ð... and as old as 34 years old by the time they take the written exam. “Those applicants who are 35 and over and have active United States military service may deduct up to six years from the age requirement.” Anyone who has been convicted of a felony, petit larceny, a domestic violence offense, or repeated convictions will disqualify the applicant. Dishonorable discharge from the military and any outstanding poor behavior at previous jobs will cause an applicant to be disqualified. Before being hired, individuals must be citizens of the United States and must be 21 years of age by the time they are hired. “Candidates must reside either within one of the five boroughs of New York City or one of the surrounding counties of New York City; Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Nassau or Putnam Counties on the day of hire.”

Potential candidates are required to have sixty college credits with no lower than a 2.0 grade point average from an accredited college or university. Candidates are also allowed if they have served two years of full time service in the United States military with an honorable discharge. A physical exam is given during this process. It involves six events all the required abilities of a New York City Police officer. The events are the barrier surmount, stair climb, physical restraint simulation, pursuit run, victim rescue, and trigger pull. During the test, all participants must wear long pants for safety reasons.

There are a few final requirements before one can enter the academy. He or she must have a NYS driver’s license. “Candidates must pay a $75.00 fee for fingerprinting as part of the investigation process.” Also, they have to pass a drug/alcohol test as well as a character and background investigation.

NYC Corrections

Since we are still discussing New York City law enforcement, many of the requirements are the same. These include requirement of an unrestricted driver’s license, the same agreement with residency, citizenship, and age minimum. Although there is the same age minimum, NYC corrections does not have an age maximum as this time. However, the “candidates must be 21 on or before the dates of their appointment.” All of the same disqualifications that the NYPD has also apply to New York’s Boldest. As for education, only thirty-nine college credits are required from the corrections department prior to taking the exam. Sixty credits must be earned by the end of academy training.

There is a three month window in which individuals can apply to take the written exam. The exam is then given about three months after the application deadline. “Correction Officers are Peace Officers under Section 1.20 of the Criminal Procedure Law. Fingerprinting is required of all employees. There is a mandatory $75 fee (Postal Money Order only) for fingerprinting. You must have your ID card with you at all times. Badges are provided by the Department to all Correction Officers.”

NYS Court Officer

Before actually becoming a New York State court officer, one must serve as a trainee for two years after completing and passing the necessary examinations. To become a trainee, one must be 18 years or older, a citizen of the United States, must have a high school diploma or equivalency, and must live in the state of New York.(2005:3) The day
