Taking personal responsibility and paying attention to detail are two very important character traits to have. it is important soldiers to demonstrate these traits but even more important for NCO's. NCO's should be held to a much higher standard than lower enlisted soldiers because of the position they are in or will be in where they enforce regulations over soldiers. They should be a role model for soldiers to follow. A lack of personal responsibility can cause many problems. Not only for the person who is making the choice not to take personal responsibility but for the people around them. one such example related to soldiers could be if a soldier with a military vehicle doesn't get the preventive maintenance done on his or her vehicle. Then when someone else would need to borrow that vehicle, the vehicle could break down or not function to its best ability. While this could just be a minor inconvenience for the soldier borrowing that vehicle, it could also be a matter of life or death. Its possible that the soldiers taking the vehicle could be on their way to clear routes on a deployment for another unit to come through and they get stuck out somewhere because the vehicle broke down and then they become targets for an enemy to attack them and even cause the unit that is needing to go out be late to where they were needing to go. This may seem like an exaggeration but it is a very possible scenario. We never know what the consequences of our choices could be. They could be insignificant or maybe a matter of life and death. Since we are not able to tell the future and see what the consequences of our decision could be, it is better to avoid the gamble all together and take personal responsibility. This means we should do the right thing and make sure that we make the responsible choices. It also very important for us as NCO's and soldiers to show personal responsibility at the work place and at home. While it may be easier to take shortcuts or take the easy way out with a job or task we are given at work or on deployment because someone isn't watching, it is not the right way to do things. We come to work everyday to learn skills we will need to take with us when we deploy and or ETS from the military to learn discipline. By making decisions not to take responsibility we are endangering ourselves, our coworkers, and our families. If we were to take shortcuts now and not fully learn skills we will need as soldiers and NCO's , we may end up one day getting called to go deploy and protect lives and not know how to handle something such as simply knowing how to lock radios the right way in vehicles because if they arent
