Exploring Limits

Ever have a stressful day at work or school? Sometimes we need somewhere to go to just be ourselves, even when we have no literal place to go. An environment need not be an actual place on Earth, so long as it is our own. My own preferred environment sometimes changes marginally with my mood and current location, but all of the elements remain consistent: drifting to my own special world and being free of the rules and regulation that society and my family demands from me.

Both at school and at home, I can be found listening to music. Rock or metal music, most often, with the occasional rap or pop song. Music allows me to hide from myself and my thoughts mix with the song. Songs, such as “Break the Spell” by Daughtry and “Broken Pieces” by Apocalyptic featuring Lacey,

At home, I stick to my bedroom with my own devices. These include my headphones, my tablet, and my phone. Music is always playing wherever I go, rock and metal music, to be exact. Sometimes I actually use my headphones, other times I merely use the speaker on my phone. Music is calming and helps relax, especially after a long day at school. This room lets me be away from distractions and other people. This way, I can more easily slip away from my being and into my work.

Even at school, music is at the top of my list, whenever I can get on a computer. Blocking out other sounds while working on classwork helps me concentrate and sometimes keeps me from getting too distracted. At the end of class, my work is always long done, even if it takes some time to do even easier tasks. By hiding from the world, I can easily slip into my own little world far from where I sit.

Next to the music, writing has always brought me content. Sitting down to write absorbs you mentally into a new place, living the characters’ lives, making their decisions in their world, and forgetting your own problems for a little while. Escaping into a new world, a new universe, galaxies away allows me to forget my own identity so that I can become Tianna, or Damien, or whoever I decide to write about. Their problems become mine and it is up to the writer, me, to figure out a course of action that allows them to overcome a looming battle or even an internal fight with themselves. Going back through their journey several times, to revise and correct some of the characters’ stupidest decisions and to make them clearer, is like remembering a memory in many ways. The right memory and faux memories, where everything is diluted and uncomprehendable.
