Plato's Republic

"The Republic" by Plato takes place in a small town where they find a small community of children with cancer. It is based on a true story about a real town that was shown in a documentary; it is a town where pesticides are used in the fields. There is one family that is especially affected by the pesticides because one woman worked in the fields during her early stages of pregnancy and she discovered that her child was born without any appendages. The story demonstrates the struggles that this family faces and it gives a sense of what many of the characters are thinking and what their attitudes are toward the situation. The story focuses on a little girl named Cerezita from a family who lives in the town. demonstrates the struggles and tells the story of this family, whose baby was born not only without appendages, but without a torso.

Surprisingly, the family shows positive attitudes toward the situation, and works hard and continues on normally despite what has happened to their daughter. Their struggle is based on environmental factors, so it may seem easily escapable, but do to the family's socio-economic condition it makes it very difficult to leave the town.

Cerezita was born as just a head, because of birth defects that were caused by her mothers intake of pesticides in the fields during her first months of pregnancy, and it may seem arguable that the mother should not have worked in the fields if she had an idea that this might occur, but when a family is poor, like this family, they need to work as much as possible to keep the bread on the table.
