JIANGSU has China's second largest provincial economy after Guangdong, with its GDP reaching Rmb344.7bn in 2009-a growth of 12.4% on the previous year. This makes its economy similar in size to that of Switzerland and bigger than those of Belgium, Sweden, Saudi Arabia and Norway. With 77.3m inhabitants it is not the most populous province but, being relatively small, it is the most densely populated.

In 2009 Jiangsu's per capita GDP was Rmb44,744, the fourth highest average in China. It is also the province with the highest number of private enterprises, a title it held for the ninth consecutive year in 2010.In 2009 the added-value generated by private enterprises accounted for 39% of the province's GDP and some 38% of Jiangsu's working population is employed in the private sector.

A large proportion of Jiangsu's industrial output is destined for foreign markets. Exports rose 40% year-on-year to US$143. 42bn.Major trading items include electronic and mechanical goods, and new- and high-technology products,

Foreign direct investment rose 13.3% year-on-year to US$216.9bn in the first nine months of 2010, accounting of just under one-fifth of the country's total. During this period, the province approved the establishment of 3,320 FIEs.

Over the last 20 years the cities along the Yangtze in the southern part of the province have prospered but the northern half remained relatively underdeveloped. This started to change in 2009 as companies relocated to lower their costs. Coastal Jiangsu, led by the cities of Lianyungang, Yancheng and Nantong, is an important part of the Yangtze River Delta regional economy.

Sometimes referred to as the “dragon's neck”, Jiangsu has hitched its fortunes to the spectacular rise of Shanghai, the “dragon's head”. As wages have risen in Shanghai, companies have moved into Jiangsu to benefit from lower costs.

In January of 2011, the provincial government agreed to raise the minimum wage by an average of more than 18%. In the Class One cities of Nanjing, Jiangyin and Nantong, the minimum wage was set to rise to Rmb1,140 from 1 February.

Good transport connections, which are constantly being improved, mean that investors here are better able to access the heart of the Chinese market than in, say, Guangdong.

The province has one of the best expressway networks in the country. All its major cities are connected. Jiangsu Expressway, which manages the Jiangsu section of the Shanghai-Nanjing expressway and other toll highways in the province, increased its operating revenue 8.8% year-on-year to Rmb5.74bn in 2009. The Jinghu expressway crosses the province while the Ningchang expressway links Nanjing with Changzhou. The Suzhou area is extensively networked with expressways, going in all directions. The Yanhai expressway links coastal regions of the province, passing through Nantong, Yancheng, and Lianyungang. With the development of Sutong Bridge and Jiangyin Bridge, the northern part of the province is now linked by road to the southern part.

Three airports at Xuzhou, Yancheng and Lianyungang serve as hubs in northern Jiangsu. In the south, Nanjing Lukou international airport is the province’s main airport and there are other passenger airports at Changzhou Benniu, Wuxi Shuofang and Nantong. The heavily populated Suzhou area is conveniently connected via express bus services to Shanghai Hongqiao airport.

苏北地区的徐州,盐城以及连云港三地的机场起着交通枢纽的作用。在苏南地区,南京禄口机场是全省的主要机场,加上常州的奔牛机场以及无锡硕放机场。人口密集的苏州地区,则很便捷的通过快速公交直达上海虹桥机场。

Jiangsu planned to invest a provincial record Rmb40bn in railway construction in 2010. A total of 700km of track was due to be built, including dedicated passenger lines between Shanghai and Nantong, Lianyungang and Yancheng, and Zhengzhou and Xuzhou. Express train services between Shanghai and Nanjing started operation in 2010.

江苏计划在2010年前所未有地拿出400亿人民币兴建铁路。规划建成总长700公里的客用轨道,列车往返于上海及南通,连云港,盐城,郑州和徐州之间。沪宁高铁从2010年起开始运营。
