The Green Mile

Did you ever think you learn how to live and the meaning of life from someone on death row? Even though the movie, The Green Mile, is about inmates who have committed deathly crimes and are on death row, the lesson is much more than about capital punishment.

In this movie, we actually learn what it is like for people to be put to death. We get to know a few of the characters and the inhumane torture some of them go through before they are given the ultimate sacrifice of their own life. The man prisoner that you become totally involved with is John Coffey, played by Michael Clarke Duncan. John Coffey is on death row for brutally butchering two very young white girls.

After you get to know John, there is always a question in your mind if he actually done the crime. He is such a gentle man and care about little things such as a mouse that becomes one of his good friends. John Coffey becomes compassionate for just about everything. It is not long until the guards discovery is special talents and the miracles he can actually perform.

The main guard that he becomes close to is Paul Edgecomb played by Tom Hanks who is also compassionate in his own right. There is nothing in this movie that is not compelling and keeps you ready to find out what is coming next.

John Coffey became the movie and he was able to endure everyone else=s pains of the world and it makes you believe in him and you want him to be found not guilty and set free for the way he is portrayed in the movie. You end of caring for these men and have sympathy for them and when they are put to death, you find yourself crying like they are your family or you are going to miss them when they are gone. It is crazy how this movie can draw you in, the characters are so believable and you find yourself all through the movie pulling for them.

Prior to the execution of John Coffey, the bound that was felt between him and the guards, especially Edgecomb, it seemed there was a lot of respect for each other and there was peace to know your friend was with you on your finally day. I actually believed that even though John Coffey was convicted of such a horrible crime, he went to heaven. You could see in the end that John Coffey was sent to the prison for the guards and the others around him because he was like an angel for heaven to make you believe all over again. You think you going to learn about the prison life and what it is like behind bars, however, you learn so much more and at times it is hard to believe they are in prison, because they make you see past the bars.
