Everyday we all make decisions of varying importance. Whether we realize it or not all decisions we make requires some sort of critical thinking to be done. Decision-making is the study of identifying and choosing alternatives based on the values and preferences of the decision maker. Making a decision implies that there are alternate choices to be considered, and in such a case we want not only to identify as many of these alternatives as possible but to choose the one that best fits with our goals, desires, lifestyle, and values.

There are several types of decisions. One type to be made is the Ethical Decision. Often, making ethical decisions in the work place is a delicate balancing act between competing forces. The steps involved in the Ethical Decision Making model are as follows:

Ð'* Identify the problem.

Ð'* Identify the potential issues involved.

Ð'* Review relevant ethical guidelines.

Ð'* Know relevant laws and regulations.

Ð'* Obtain Consultation.

Ð'* Consider possible and probable courses of action.

Ð'* List the consequences of the probable courses of action.

Ð'* Decide on what appears to be the best course of action.

It is extremely important that you keep your immediate supervisor and all involved parties informed during this process. After you have made your decision, take

some time to reflect on the process and to review what you have learned with a trusted supervisor or colleague.

Ethical Decision I have faced

An ethical decision I have faced in the past involved a personal relationship between two of my colleagues. One was a manager and the other his co-worker. What made this relationship un-ethical was the fact the manager was about to be married and his co-worker was a married woman. There had been speculation around the office Rocky and Teresa were having a relationship however nothing was ever confirmed. One day a fellow co-worker, Ryan, saw the two between the stairwell in a rather compromising position. The next day Ryan was called into the office by Rocky and informed if he ever said anything about what he had seen it could possibly prevent him from being considered for any future advancement within the company. After this meeting, Ryan confided in me about what was said. I was left with an ethical decision to be made. I knew I needed to do something however there were going to be some rather harsh consequences to my decision. Here are the steps I took to resolve the issue:

Ð'* The issue at hand was two employees were having an affair. Company policy dictated this was not allowed. One employee had been put in a compromising position and has been threatened with no future growth within the company.
