The book, Funny in Farsi, and the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, both have very similar characteristics. They main characters both experience hardships from living a different life than most children their own age. They also have very different family rituals since Firoozeh is Muslim, and Toula is Greek Orthodox. They both also learn to appreciate the little thinks in life that they may not have had if their families had not immigrated to this country. As a whole, the two families were alike in many different ways, but the main similarity was that they share very different family practices from the average American home.

In Funny in Farsi, Firoozeh's fiancÐ"©s' parents do not approve of the wedding because she was Muslim. They both think that it is wrong for him to marry her, but the two lovebirds go along with the beautiful ceremony anyway. In My Big Fat Greek Wedding, it's the opposite; Toula's parents are the ones who do not approve of the wedding. The entire family thinks that it is wrong because Ian, Toula's fiancÐ"©, is neither Greek nor Greek Orthodox, which is very important to the family. Both of these incidences are very strange because one is very hard-pressed to find a "pure" person in American, such as Greek or Italian. This may be why the United States is considered to be such a "melting pot".

Also in the book and the movie, the families both very much enjoy the little things in like that many Americans take for granted. Since both of the families originated from countries that are not a technologically advanced as the United Sates, they would notice the things that America has had for some period of time. Both of the fathers in the stories had a very large obsession with something they did not have back in their native countries. Toula's father, Gus, loved Windex and was convinced that it could cure any ailment; of course this was not the care since it was a household cleaner, as many people know. Firoozeh's father, Kazem, was completely amazed by Disney World, which many American's have gone to at least once
