Purpose: the purpose of this experiment is to gain experience with a balance and using volumetric equipment, to determine the density of materials, and to learn how to graph and use linear regression to analyze data

Hypothesis: I think that the density adds the density of one penny as u keep adding pennies. Therefore, if you go from 1 penny to 2 pennies, the density will increase by the density of one penny.

Background: Matter is something that has mass and takes up space. Intensive physical properties do not depend on the amount of matter present. Density is the ratio between the amount of matter, mass, and the space it occupies, volume. It is measured by mass divided by volume. Commonly used terms for mass are grams, g, or kilograms, kg. volume terms are kiloliters, kl, liters, l, milliliters, ml, or cubic centimeters, cm . using the water displacement method helps to get the volume. This method means to fill a container with water and record the initial volume. Then place the item in the water. Then record to final volume. Subtract the initial volume from the final volume and that gives u the volume of the object. The slope formula is

(y -y )/(x -x ).

Procedure:

1. Obtain 21 pennies from before 1982 and 21 from after 1982

2. Fill a graduated cylinder with 15 ml of water. Record the results in the initial volume box of your charts. The initial volume will remain the same throughout the experiment.

3. Using one penny from before 1982, weigh it and record the mass on the table.

4. Slide the penny into the water and "spank" out any bubbles. Record the new volume in the chart.

5. Record the weight of two pennies from before 1982 and record the mass, and slide them in the water so now there are 3 pennies in the water. Record the new volume.
