Biology

What is this major?

Biology is the study of all living organisms-their structures, their functions, their genetics, and all processes that make up living things. There are many fields within this major, including biochemistry, botany, cellular biology, molecular biology, ecology, and genetics. Biochemistry is about the matter that makes up an organism, cellular biology is the study of cells, and molecular biology is about macromolecules, like proteins, and how they function. Since biology is such a vast subject of study, many of these fields overlap. For example, a person cannot study cellular biology without any knowledge of molecular biology or biochemistry.

Why am I interested?

I am interested in Biology because I have loved science for a long time and have always been fascinated by it. I like to get to know of all the different things that are on our planet that I didn’t even know existed and how different organisms function. I have been pretty good at both science and math, which is quite crucial in this major. I am also interested in majoring in biology because it is a great preparatory course for admission into medical. I want to become some sort of doctor in the future, which also means that I have to go to a medical school after college. Although most medical schools don’t mind what you major in as long as some requirements are met, they like seeing people who have a biology background as it will be very useful.

Careers that stem from this major:

  1. Biochemists: Biochemists study the chemical structures of living things, such as metabolism, growth, and heredity. Biochemists usually work with biotechnology, which is equipment that is specialized for its function.

Average Pay: $73,950 per year

  1. Biological Technician: A biological technician uses lab skills learned through biology to create studies and produce results based on the studies.

Computer science is the study of creating systems or programs through programming, operating different systems, and software design. This major involves the study of algorithms, or sets of rules that are to be followed by a computer, the components inside a computer, and different programming languages that computers follow. Once a program is made, hours are usually spent just to test and debug, or get rid of any mistakes, on it. This major is also concerned with interaction between humans and technology, or artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is the science of imitating human intelligence in computers. This can allow a computer to do many things, like visually understand something, such as an image.

Why am I interested?

I am interested in Computer Science because of how versatile it is. There are many things in computer science that you have to learn while studying it in college, and it gives you a chance to find what you really like out of all of those things. I am also interested in majoring in computer science because I have worked with computers since I was young, know a lot about them, and enjoy using them. I think that it would be kind of fun to able to create programs and see my work come to life on computers. Also, I have seen that people with a major in computer science make a lot of money in their careers because there is a high demand for this major.

Careers that stem from this major:

  1. Software Engineer: Software engineers are fully in charge of creating and implementing a new software based on the needs of their customer(s).

Average Pay: $100,690 per year
