Nubia Video

The video that we watched in class last week, was very I opening even for a person like me who thought I a good understanding of the African continent and it's people. I was sort of confused by the distinction being drawn between the Egyptian Pharos, and the so call black pharos of Nubian. Where the Egyptian Pharos not African? Or where they just of lighter skin color? Where these people peacefully coexisting neighbors, or bitter rivals? What ever they where, it is no doubt that they at one time this region of Africa was the part of the one of greatest civilizations ever. The European and Western world has portrayed Africa as a backwards, uncivilized, savage fill continent. They would have you believe that European influence and colonization has improved it condition, and that with out it Africans would be worst off then they are now.

The video show the remnants of an ancient civilization call the Nubians, it explores their culture, language, and history. It also show the struggle that they are currently going through in order to survive and keep there land from being drowned by the new damns being built in order to bring electricity to the surrounding areas. Much of the history about this area is still being uncovered by archaeology. I lot of the discovery will probably go undiscovered because a lot of land was drowned by the damns. The video also displayed the influence that the fundamentalist Islamic governments have shaped and controlled the Nubians that currently reside in them. Some of the women in the video where obviously fearful of speaking freely about their option of the damns which seems to the essence of some of the problems in Africa today, the leaders are corrupt.
