KIDS – CRJU/SOCL/EDTR 223 Extra Credit Option

Students may either view the film at the Essex CCBC Library, where it is on reserve, or students may access the film through other means, i.e. Netflix, Block Buster, Hollywood Video, friends, etc.  Instructions: Students need to watch the film (about 90 minutes in length) and answer the questions listed below; the answers should be specific to the film. Students can earn up to 10 points extra credit.

1.  Based on discussions in class about adolescents’ mindsets/frame of reference; why does the girl consent to sexual intercourse with Telly in the opening scene?

Based on their physcoanalitics the ID is in charge of the need to have instant gratification also hormones play a big part in having an active/consistent sex drive.

2. Using Routine Activities theory, explain how Telly and Casper steal from the convenience store.

Both were motivated offenders because they were thirsty. The suitable target was a convenience store that was run by a Chinese man that was easily distractible because of his poor English. And the absence of guardian ship is that there was no one else in the stop that had the capability of stopping the two from committing a criminal act i.e the man’s son that was sitting outside the front of the store playing on an instrument.

3. Find at least three (3) risk factors and (2) protective factors for Telly.

Risk: Hanging out with other almost adult peers. He lives in the center of a rundown city that probably has a lot of poverty and drugs. And he does not know his own health because he has a sexually transmitted disease that he is passing around to a bunch of partners.

Protective: He has two parents that want him to get a job. And he’s not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

4. Based on discussions in class about adolescents’ mindsets/frame of reference; what does the boys’ dialogue about AIDS, unprotected sex, and numerous partners display?

They think they are invincible and that they don’t stop to think about their actions having consequences in the long run. Plus it doesn’t help that they are opportunistic.

5.  Although we are only observing Telly for less than 24 hours, assume that he has been demonstrating these behaviors for at least twelve months. Which Conduct disorder diagnostic criteria (refer to class handout) did you observe?

I observed Telly showing signs of deceitful behavior and violating rules. These are good examples of him not knowing how his behavior can hurt others and not showing signs of guilt or remorse.

6. Initially at the party at Steven’s, the viewer sees two sets of kids – younger adolescent/ middle school age boys and older adolescent/high school males. How are there behaviors different?

Younger- childish behaviors that include throwing food, jumping up and down on furniture, and not interested in sex.

Middle- Playing fighting with other males, some childish behavior like throwing water balloons, experimenting sexually but not fully interested in having sex.

High school- Only focused on drugs and alcohol while strongly focusing on having sex even to the point of being aggressive with their partner or begging/ over affectionate with their partner to try to persuade them into sexual acts.
