"Vera Drake" was a movie based upon a cheerful woman named Vera Drake who lived in London in the 1950s. She had many daily tasks of being a housekeeper, wife and mother of two. Secretively Mrs. Drake would help young girls out with there mistakes. Abortions were illegal and expensive. Mrs. Drake believed nobody should have to live with the mistake if they are not ready for a child. Mrs. Drake performed abortions in the homes of these young women. Vera Drake never told her family what she did, in fear of the embarrassment or shame it may bring. Mrs. Drake would go into the young girls homes, perform the abortion with the same technique and instruments, and tell the woman in about three days you will bleed it out. Questions were throw at Mrs. Drake after the abortion was performed about what happens next. She never had an answer because she didn't know herself. There was never any post care to check the patient for any risk that came along with the procedure. Mrs. Drake never practiced in medicine and was not licensed nor specialized in the field. Later her poor actions caught up to her and she was arrested. She was hurting people more then she was helping them. The news was then broken to her family about her secretive abortions. Views on this cheerful woman changed quickly. Abortions then were legalized in 1967.
