ASSIGNMENTS and EVALUATION:

1) EXAMS--Students in this course are required to take a midterm exam (March 14th) and a final exam (scheduled for May 9th). Each exam is worth a maximum of 100 points.

2) ESSAYS--This course requires the completion of two essay assignments. The first assignment required of all students in the class will focus on the film The Village as the basis for analysis using the ritual view of communication. A specific assignment for this essay will be distributed in class. In addition, each student will choose (from three assignment options) to write one critical essay based on one of the three major texts (Miller, Kincaid, Berger) used in this course. The essays should be 750-900 words (approximately 3 double-spaced pages) and will be focused on assignments distributed in class. Due dates for each essay assignment options are listed on the course outline below. Papers for a specific assignment will not be accepted once that due date has passed. All essays are due no later than the time specified on the due dates listed below. All papers must be submitted in a typed, double-spaced, and printed copy. E-mail submissions are not acceptable. PAPERS MAY NOT BE FAXED. Students are required to make a second copy of their essays and keep them until final grades for the course have been submitted. This is a large class, and the policy of retaining a copy of your essay is for your own protection in the case of a lost essay. Each essay is worth a maximum of 100 points.

3) QUIZZES--Throughout the semester, there will be five unannounced quizzes that focus on course material (readings, lectures, films) due at that class meeting. The objective of these quizzes is to ensure that students are doing the coursework, prepared for our class meetings, and in attendance. There will be no make-up quizzes given for those missed during a class meeting. Each quiz is worth a maximum of 10 points.

4) EXTRA CREDIT--Students frequently ask about extra credit work to improve their grade. There are two opportunities to earn extra credit. The first opportunity will be to write a 2 page critical essay about one of the five films exhibited during the free Tournйes French Film festival at NAU, February 10-11. More specific details about this assignment will be discussed in class. The second opportunity will be to write a 2 page critical essay about Elia Kazan's film A Face in the Crowd, which will be shown for free on April 10 at 7:00 pm at the Cline Library. More specific details about this assignment will be discussed in class. Each extra credit assignment is worth
