Abstract

This paper addresses the positive aspects of online social networking for antisocial students. Although the educational system has been edited to teach students how to become successful in the real world, there are a small percentage of students that will require a different approach due to their shyness. Shyness is the act of feeling uncomfortable in social situations in ways that interfere with the ability to enjoy themselves or that cause one to avoid social situations altogether (Gilbert, 2001). These students can begin overcoming such by networking online.

Online Social Networking

Researchers have demonstrated a correlation between antisocial behavior and academic failure among students. Although the current educational programs are designed to modify these patterns of conduct, there are existing gaps to a percentage of those students. Due to today's technology, social networking sites are used by a variety of individuals of all age groups, backgrounds, and personalities. Online social networking is an effective support system for shy students.

The first way online social networking is an effective support system for shy students is it facilities relationship building. Effective communication is an effective part of life. It will help strengthen existing relationships as well as form positive bonds in future interactions. As a shy and antisocial student, online networking allows the individual to become comfortable in talking with others and later developing the ability to interact face to face. Students can connect and with groups of friends, colleagues, and create new contacts in the comfort of their own space as they learn to become effective communicators.
