My Life Changing moment

Throughout my childhood my mother worked at home, while my father worked a ten-hour work day. Due to this, I had always had a closer relationship with my mother. She was always the person that picked me up from school and the person who pushed me to do things that scared me. I couldn’t go a day without having a conversation with her. The relationship with my father had consisted of seeing each other for a few hours each day. During these hours we did not speak much. My father was never someone to be at my sporting events or go outside and play with me. This all changed in 2012. My mother had decided that she was going to start a job that would require her to travel for sixty percent of the time.

I vividly remember the day my mother told me she had decided to switch jobs. I didn’t fully understand what was happening until the day she left for her first five-day trip. I had tried to be brave but on the inside I was scared for what that first week without her would consist of. My father was now going to be in my life more than ever. He was being forced to decrease the hours that he worked each day, which was unusual for me. This change would force me to grow up faster than all my friends. My mother's first trip was difficult for me and my father. We were both stepping into new roles in the household, and we were being forced into a closer relationship, that was very different for us. The first trip consisted of disagreements and a lot more responsibilities than I was used to. I couldn’t go a day without calling my mother. When she arrived home it was a relief.

Over the next couple months me and my father were still getting a hang of the changes. There was a lot of disagreements between us, but we were finally starting to have real conversations. It was like we were getting to know each other for the first time. I was learning new things about him, and he was getting to know the little things about me.
