John Proctor used to be an untrustworthy person who transformed into an individual who stood up for himself and his wife. Initially, Proctor cheated on his wife while she was ill with Abigail. This then resulted in losing the trust of Elizabeth. Throughout The Crucible, Proctor became an admirable character who could be looked up to.

John Proctor first mistreats his wife, Elizabeth, by committing adultery and sabotaging their marriage. Abigail claims to love Proctor after their affair and continues to come onto him. Realizing his mistake, he no longer has lust for Abigail Williams. This creates Abigail’s jealousy of his wife, Elizabeth. Although Proctor has no feelings for Abigail, Elizabeth doesn’t put her trust into him any longer.

Abigail’s jealousy of Elizabeth only adds fuel to all the hysteria that she brings about. Proctor realizes that he can put an end to Abigail’s rampage through Salem during the trials. The only way to do this though, is to confess to his adultery. He is a good man along with a good name in the eyes of the villagers of Salem. So to confess to such an unacceptable sin would mean giving up his name and positive reputation throughout the town. Knowing this, he still reveals his guilt publicly and calls Abigail a “whore.” This is a very significant turning point for Proctor’s character.

All in all, Proctor was once a man who placed such great emphasis on his reputation. He transformed into a person who is more concerned with his personal integrity than his public reputation. This is what makes John Proctor such an admirable character. He proves that transformation is very well possible and inspires others to stand up for what you believe in. He plays his part by sacrificing himself and becoming a martyr.
