Problem

In the University of Cincinnati's College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services the college bulletin states "Advancement in the program (Secondary Education) consists of a three-step process. During year three education students who meet requirements for advancing in the program must attend a mandatory information meeting during fall quarter and in early winter submit a completed application for admission to the secondary education cohort that begins the following autumn quarter." The problem with this is the timing of the process. Beginning the process during autumn quarter does not allow students enough time to satisfy the requirements needed to get into the cohort. This shrinks the size of the applicant pool and makes the process less competitive than it is reported to be. The University of Cincinnati's education program is a leader in the nation and has 100% of its students pass the Praxis II exam. The cohort process that the university uses sets it apart from other colleges education programs. This can attract new students as well as deter students from entering the program or continuing in the program at this university. This is because the process only occurs once during the year and if a student doesn't make it in they will have to wait until the next year to apply again. The harm this causes to the college because it may prevent the recruitment of new students and it can also contribute to more students leaving the program. An example of where the current cohort selection process causes problems is in the case of a situation I have experienced myself. I came to the University of Cincinnati autumn quarter as a transfer student. During autumn I met with my advisor who said I was eligible to apply for cohort, so I attended the mandatory meeting. Cohort applications were due the first week of winter quarter which was not enough time to take the test or get a GPA high enough in one quarter to meet the requirement when it was averaged with the GPA from my other college. This may have also happened to other students who in turn will have to wait until next year to apply and the following year to begin cohort courses. This delays a student's graduation for one whole year.
