'He was, for the moment, in a spot'.(From 'How about this') In 'Will you please be quiet, please?' Raymond Carver's characters each struggle to overcome their own moment of personal crisis. Discuss.

'He turned the spear in his hands and began to unwrap the netting' ('Sixty acres') this is an action from one of Carver's characters going through a moment of personal crisis. Although not all of Carvers characters are going through a personal moment of crisis evidence suggests that most are. There is evidence in the three stories 'Signals', 'Sixty Acres' and 'How about this' where there is a subtle link in all three stories to verify that Carvers characters are infact having to overcome their own moment of personal crisis.

Lee's struggle with a final decision was in the story 'Sixty Acres' which featured many references to overcoming a moment of personal crisis. Carver deliberately gives the readers symbolic concepts with this story including when Lee was holding the spear, it represented he's Native American heritage, when Lee's mother wasn't speaking to him because he had lost all understanding of being a Native American, which made their relationship very distant. The ultimate descions Lee had to make was about keeping his heritage with his land Sixty Acres. Which t is therefore keeping he's identity as a Native American man or leasing it to the local white gun club in town for money. Lees values is less about Native American heritage and even considering leasing the land.' Its just a lease!' Nina, Lee's wife is confused on the idea about the lease and worried on what Lee's mother will think and if they will still own the land. When Lee says 'Its my land' this suggests that even though Lee will be leasing the land. All the Native American heritage will stay where it belongs and by looking at the spear. Carver suggests that Lee needs rethink on how much he's heritage should mean more to him. And I believe Lee does this therefore overcoming his personal moment of crisis.

'My god, you wouldn't mind roughing it, I mean? Living in the country like that?' Harry says from one of Cavers short stories 'How about This' Harry's personal moment of crisis is approaching as Harry and Emily are making their way to their new country humble abode. 'Harry had always lived in cities san Francisco for the last three years and, before that Los Angeles, Chicago and New York '. This is Harry.. a city boy, clearly not ready to adapt to the country environment. Carver purposely exaggerates the extent to which Harry is not fitted for a country lifestyle.' I could live there again. I don't know about you though, Harry' Emily says implying if Harry will be able to stand the country life. Carver also implies by this quote that Harry's values might be more materialistic, where as Emily is good hearted and only cares about love. Harry's personal moment of crisis is adapting to this new environment. The evidence for this is 'He tried to smile' a quote suggesting that Harry really isn't happy with his new surroundings also 'He tried to cover his disappointment ' By overcoming this moment of personal crisis in the story 'How about this' ends with a line that Emily says that reassures Harry and helps Harry overcome this moment of personal crisis 'Harry, we have to love
