Huckleberry Finn Essay

In, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses Huck Finn's personal experiences and moral growth to comment on the society's lack of logic and egotistic nature. The reason, however, for most of the society's lack of logic and egotistic nature is due to the lack of education the majority of the society gets.

The decision to let Huck Finn stay in custody of his abusive and drunk father shows a part of the society's lack of logic (16). The decision, made by a Judge, is an educated man, but still makes an ill mistake. Twain is being satirical at the society's nature to be unable to see many of the consequences of its actions.

When Huck and Jim disappear, the society jumps to a quick conclusion because of their egotistic nature. "Most everyone thought it at first...But before night they changed around and judged it wad done by a runaway nigger named Jim" (42). They are proud that their society is flawless and is a "civilized" society. In their society, all bad luck and omens go to their inferior slaves. Twain is showing how the society lacks logic and is egotistic. They change their minds and don't admit that anyone in their society can do any wrong. Huck also goes through moral growth and is able to distinguish what is right from wrong. "Git up Jim...They're after us" (47) the quote shows Huck's growth by saving someone whom his society believes is inferior to them in everyway possible.

Huck's decision to call on a watch guard to help some stranded thieves (56) shows his mature growth. Again helping thieves, who the society views as worthless, shows Huck's character and kind hearted nature. When Huck and Jim run into white men looking for slaves, they trick them into believing that Huck has smallpox. "We are right down sorry for you, we don't want the small-pox" (68). Twain is again showing the lack of logic the society has. They cannot make out a small prank such as that and get fooled by a man with no education and a boy with very minimal education. Twain is showing the society's easiest weak point that can be exploited very easily.

When Huck and the town witness a shooting of a drunker by Sherburn, the town wants to hang Sherburn. "The idea of you lynching anybody! It's amusing" (110). The crowd hears Sherburn say this and moves away. Twain shows how easily the crowd is swayed and shows
